Are you ready for A level results day?

Whether you think you will do great or maybe not so well, it is advised to be ready and prepare now.

A level results

A Level results day is on Thursday, 15 August 2019 and for many of you, it will mean the start of a new course at your chosen university.

What happens if i get higher grades than expected?

Congratulations, you did amazing! You might be happy where you are, but with UCAS's "Adjustment" service, you could swap to another course and different university if you wish. Adjustment is available from A level results day until 31 August 2019. It is completely optional, and bear in mind that a lot of competitive courses will be full. However, it would be worth checking out what's available as other applicants might have missed their conditions or also swapped a course.

What if i have my exam results, but i have no offers or none that i wanted to accept?

If you already have your exam results but you have no offers, you can use Clearing from July till September. Also, if you had conditional offers but your exam results didn't go to plan, you can use Clearing from results day. Clearing is also available if you are holding a firm unconditional place but have changed your mind, in this case you can decline your place on UCAS's "Track" platform.

travel and work

If you don't want to rush into a course or university as you are not really happy with either of them, you also have alternative options which include retaking your exams and reapplying next year. Or, you could take a gap year to work and perhaps travel. These experiences will enrich your personal statement and CV.

How can i prepare now?

Clearing opened on 5 July 2019 and many universities are already advertising their courses available through this system. You can search for Clearing vacancies on UCAS's search tool, although private institutions' courses might not be listed on UCAS site. So be sure to check for available courses on Google and of course on our Clearing site.

You can become a Clearing Star by registering for priority Clearing alerts before the Clearing lines open on 15 August 2019.

So start to look around now, see what courses are available, the sooner you apply the better as some courses can take a limited number of students.

It is better to be prepared for not getting the results you are hoping for and having to go through Clearing. So make a list of potential alternative courses and universities with numbers you may need to ring.

Is Clearing only for those who didn't get the expected grades?

NO, Clearing is not only for those who didn't get the expected grades, some potential university students don't even apply to universities until they know their results.

stay positive good things will happen

If you decided what subject you want to study and nothing else interests you, research what other institutions offer that specific subject.

It is not advisable to go to a uni just because all your friends are going there. Don't let anyone pressure you into a choice either, remember that it is your choice!

Decide what you want, ask yourself:

  • what is my dream job?

  • what do i enjoy doing?

  • where do i see myself in 5 years?

Most importantly, DO NOT PANIC, plan ahead and stay open minded! Remember that everything happens for a reason and you might find yourself in a much happier place than with your original choice.
